A while back, I invited all 2007 candidates for Local 384’s executive board to contact me if they wanted to be interviewed here. I am willing to post interviews with any and all candidates for this year’s Local 384 election, provided they contact me before October 12, 2007.

The interview questions below were submitted to Kathy Duffy, a candidate for Trustee in the 2007 local election. Here are those questions along with her answers:

What was your first exposure to union culture (through family, job experience, etc.)?

First I come from centuries of Union organizers and leaders in Philly. My Uncle was John McCollugh.

As long as I remember I went to the Union Halls while my uncles looked at the Job Board (one thing I promise our Hall will install).

In what ways have you been actively involved in the union to this point?

I have been a Steward at UPS over 10 years, and always talk to anyone in trouble about their rights.

How would you prioritize the responsibilities of union leadership (tasks like contract negotiation, enforcement, grievance resolution, informing and training members)?

Informing and re-introducing the Ipoders of today to the UNION mentality. They are Union members hired by their perspective employers.

Does the lack of involvement by most union members bother you? If so, do you have any ideas to remedy the situation?

Yes. I intend to inject the Union till I die into these members who just think they don’t need to matter.

What personal experience most qualifies you for the office you seek?

I am OSHA and Workers comp educated and qualified to steer people to demand safe and fair treatment in the workplace and in any medical treatment they need. I also constantly demand they speak up about Job issues and why seniority is first, not favorites.
