Telling Fact from Fiction

Courtesy of American Rights at Work, here’s some interesting material regarding “The Center for Union Facts,” another one of those sneaky websites that pretends to be about truth when it’s really just about bashing unionism. SourceWatch also has useful information for those fooled by this kind of anti-union propaganda.
Like most corporate lobby propaganda efforts, the so-called Center for Union Facts does its best to hide who’s really behind their effort. If you were to check out their “about” page, you’ll find no information about who actually runs the campaign. Instead, you’ll find more propaganda squeezed into a FAQ section that, incredibly, contends the organization is not against unions - a claim you’d have a hard time reconciling with the rest of the website, which has nothing but negative commentary and bad stereotypes about the labor movement.
The facts, as usual, contradict just about every major claim on the Center’s website. The most important truth to remember, though, is this one: Unions, for whatever faults anyone can pin on them, do more for workers than any other corporate-funded lobby ever has.
Union members earn more, have more (job, health and retirement) security, and more time for things that matter (like their families) than their non-union counterparts. Not only that, but industries with a substantial union presence tend to offer better compensation, even in non-union shops. And states without anti-union right to work (for less) laws report higher income levels and increased living standards.
I’m writing this post because it’s important to know the enemy. Just take care not to be fooled by their rhetoric.
